Joining Sufi orders and engaging in cult practices is not permissible – Supreme Leader Syed Ali Khamenei
بِسۡمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ○
Translation: In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
Question: What is the ruling on attending gatherings of mystics and Sufis, performing their specific practices and litanies, and visiting their khānqāhs (lodges)?
Answer: Doing so is not permissible. How good it would be if those who accept the commands and prohibitions of the Noble Qur’an and believe in the Imamate of the Pure Imams (peace be upon them) were to abandon adopting separate titles and distinct customs and rituals—which are harmful—without necessity, and instead affiliate themselves with the great Muslim community. (1)
Question: Some claimants of Irfān (gnosis عرفان), inclining toward Sufism, promote certain of its beliefs, such as abstaining from marriage, people praying to saints (pīrs), and the use of terms like “Sharī‘ah (religious rules) and Ṭarīqah (spiritual path)”. Are these concepts acceptable, and what is the ruling on attending the gatherings of such people?
Answer: These ideas are incorrect, and promoting falsehood is not permissible. (2)
Question: What is the ruling on going to Sufi lodges, attending Sufi gatherings, and following the instructions of a so-called spiritual guide, and similar matters?
Answer: Cases differ. The path to salvation and success is to follow the way of the Ahl al-Bayt of infallibility and purity (peace be upon them), as explained by the great juristic authorities (marājiʿ al-taqlīd). (3)
